Donderberg: The First Battle Won – The Struggle for the Forest Continues
Something shifted on the Donderberg.
What was once marked for demolition, clearance, and concrete — has now been reclaimed by those who believe in something radically different: a living forest, not a dead plan. Together with neighbors, supporters and allies, we’ve achieved a first major victory:
The building plans have been officially cancelled.
For years, the land was zoned for future development — one more patch of green set to disappear under asphalt and speculation. But through grassroots organizing, community pressure, and persistent presence, we’ve forced a stop to that trajectory.
This is not the end — it’s the end of the beginning.
🌿 What Comes Next: Protect the Wild
The next phase is clear:
We demand that the zoning status of the terrain be changed, so that no developer, no state, no private buyer can ever come back with blueprints and bulldozers.
We want the forest to remain sauvage — untamed, collective, and free from extraction.
That means:
- Pressure on local authorities to reclassify the land
- Gathering legal, ecological, and community tools
- Telling the story, loud and wide
- Continuing to care for and inhabit the space

We know we’re not alone. Across territories, from ZADs in France to forest occupations in Germany, from indigenous land defense to urban garden struggles — the battle for land is alive.

Save Donderberg
Donderberg Sauvage est un collectif qui vise à empêcher la bétonisation du Donderberg, une friche de 3,6ha laissée à l’état sauvage depuis plus de 50 ans en plein coeur de Laeken à Bruxelles (10min à pied du métro Bockstael).
Depuis 10 ans déjà un comité de quartier et un collectif de riverain·e·s (Save Donderberg) s’affairent à bloquer ce projet via des leviers politiques et juridiques (contacts avec partis politiques, recours au tribunal, …). Après 5 refontes des plans et l’échec des derniers recours, plus rien ne s’oppose désormais au démarage d’un chantier impliquant l’artificialisation de 70% du site, l’abattage de plus de 150 arbres de haute tige ainsi que la destruction d’habitat d’espèces comme la martre et le renard.
C’est pourquoi nous, activistes de divers horizons, désireus·es de préserver le site tant pour sa valeur environementale que sociale (le quartier de Bockstael étant extrêmement dense, pauvre et quasi dénué d’espaces verts) sommes décidé·e·s à empêcher ces travaux via d’autres leviers (manifestations, visibilisation de cette lutte au sein des réseaux militants / activistes, organisation d’évènements, actions concrètes, …). Dans un esprit solidaire, nous espérons que nos efforts pourront, en complémentarité à ceux des riverain·e·s en lutte aboutir à la préservation ce cet espace unique en région Bruxelloise.
